Gchatting the Eagles #4: UCF Preview

timstwrt
here's where our previewing skills will really shine...a game neither of us will be able to watch live against an opponent we know next to nothing about
percDM
haha
i read phil steele's take on ucf last night
and i read some recaps of their first game
if there is something else you need to know about ucf, i wouldn't know what it is
for example, their quarterback's name is godfrey
timstwrtyeah, and he likes to run
also, daniel tosh went to UCF
so we shouldn't give him another thing to be smug about
percDMi didn't know he went to college
timstwrthe's also older than you'd think
  36
percDMapparently ucf is older than i think
timstwrtwe're off to a good start
ok, so i'm choosing to ignore their game last week against directional south carolina village
their defense was very strong last year, but they lost a lot of guys
and their coach, of course, is a liar
percDMi don't know, he has an impeccable resume
 timstwrtjokes!
percDMtheir new defensive coordinator is apparently their old defensive coordinator
so i don't think they'll be suffering from any scheming issues
timstwrthow does that work?
percDMbut i guess they lost their big defensive playmaker from last year
he left to go somewhere and it didn't work out, so he is back
 i looked it up
timstwrtsort of like how i'd like BC to handle their offensive coordinator position
  miss u, steve logan
percDM he was the defensive coordinator, then he went to houston
timstwrtnot a school historically known for its defense
percDMapparently houston didn't care for the lack of defense, so he came back to ucf as a linebackers coach and was just promoted back to ucf DC
yeah, i'm considerably less afraid of their defense knowing that houston didn't like where he was taking the defense
so, i've been thinking about our offense, and its possible that i overreacted
we won't have harris or momah, but we might still be able to move the ball
it looks like rogers shifted the line back to their previous positions and there are rumblings that they are gelling well
timstwrt rumblings? do you have BC practice sources?
 percDMthe internet
i rely on the internet for information
timstwrtrumblings sounds like you're peter king
 percDMwho needs "sources"
if i can't share third hand information, then maybe its time to shut down our gchat blogtimstwrthere are my concerns
1) we didn't look good against a running QB last week
  2) they apparently have a return guy who's a threat
this seems like a close game that we should win, but a special teams TD changes that balance for me
 percDMthose are fair concerns
  i'm really concerned about godfrey
timstwrt and if andre williams refuses to run between the tackles, it'll be a long night
percDM however, i'm not sure how well godfrey can pass
the ucf offense seems very run heavy
i think we should be able to contain godfrey enough when we stack the box
and we should be stacking the box all day
i think you are right about the special teams game
it is going to be a close game, and a big play could cost us
as far as williams is concerned, i am choosing to believe that he was still hurt and that is why he did not run tough
timstwrtwell, that was five days ago
percDMhopefully, he has continued to heal and will be 100% or close to it
yeah, there is a lot of hope in that hopefully
timstwrti think UCF's pretty good. i also hope that our lines have adjusted and will utilize their talent advantages
percDM i'm worried about the d-line
i think three defensive linemen are out for this game
but it would be hard for the line to play worse than last game
timstwrt ramsey and appiah are out for sure
 also, donnie fletcher is doubtful
the linebackers are actually going to have to cover the entire field this week
 percDMsounds about right
timstwrtthis feels like a game where, if i weren't a total homer, i'd pick UCF to win by 10
but i think rettig makes enough plays and the defense contains just enough
percDM i'm feeling a little more positive than i was two days ago, and so i actually think we have a good chance to win this game
also, i'm completely incapable of separating from my homerism
what do you think the final score will be?
 timstwrt30-23 eagles
percDM wow, big day for the eagle offense
or is Kuechly scoring?
timstwrtsad that 30 is "big day," but you're not wrong kuechly might need to score thricepercDMi'm going with 20-17 eagles
two solid field goals gets the kicking game back on track
timstwrtsays the world's foremost champion of field goal kicking
this is the must winniest second game i can recall
because we're close to the abyss with a loss here
Darren: yeah, if we lose this, i don't see a path to bowl eligibility
i'm feeling a little optimistic though
timstwrt that makes one of us
there's a lot of tightening up that has to happen this week
percDMyeah, but that is true of a lot of teams ever year after week 1
and a lot of teams turn it around after weak opening performances
 timstwrtwell, here's hoping
2011 Boston College Football: Here's Hoping
percDM we had 6 big weaknesses last game - o-line play, d-line play, williams running, secondary tackling, field goal kicking, and late game management
i think we can fix 4 or 5 of those easily enough
but, i think late game management will be an issue all year
and i'm pretty sure it'll be an issue on saturday
it'll be a tough game to watch down the stretch
timstwrtthose 6 are like 80% of the game
so there's a lot to fix
percDMbut its fixable
  i think
timstwrtit's reasonable to say that we'll learn a lot about this team saturday
 Darren: agreed
